5 miles south of San Luis by Susan and Milt Sanderford. The area is to be free, open to the public, and non-denominational,
with trees including aspens, statues, a 5 pointed star flower box, and eventually labyrinths, a stone circle, a medicine wheel,
reflecting pool, meditation areas, and a ceremonial pit. This seems like a lovely use of vacant land and if you are in the
area and want to help or contribute, contac the Casa Mystica in San Luis (Main Street Restaurant.) The garden is on Hwy 159

ENJOY THE FALL HOLIDAYS. Happy Halloween and Happy Thanksgiving! | NEWS OF THE AREA The US Mint announced in early September that The Great Sand Dunes
National Park will be featured as part of its series of new quarters to be released as its "America The Beautiful"
series starting 2010 to 2021. The quarters will be issued in order of when each scenic area in the US was recognized; the
Sand Dunes coin will appear in 2014.
Louis Bacon, current owner of the former Forbes Trinchera Ranch, did work
in the SDCR area this year, including paving Trinchera Road. His organization also moved some homes off the main drag and
reportedly donated some of the buildings for better causes, and made owners of others offers they couldn't refuse.
The Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area was dedicated in late August and well attended by state and national officials.
A 3,000 square foot area in three southern Colorado counties, this diverse part of our state has great cultural and historic
value. It includes the rugged 14,000 foot mountains of the Sangre de Cristo range, including Mount Blanca, the Great Sand
Dunes National Park, 3 national Wildlife Refuges, a National Forest, and the beginnings of the Rio Grande River, the third
longest in the US. From a cultural standpoint, the area has been home to human settlers for the last 12,000 years, including
numerous Indian tribes, Spanish Conquistadores, other European Settlers, and Mexicans. There are 20 properties in this designated
area that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Fort in Fort Garland, and the narrow-gauge
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad between Antonito, CO and Chama, NM
Ken Salazar, former US Senator from Colorado,
native son of the San Luis Valley, and current Secreatry of the Interior was on hand at the dedication and surprised everyone
by announcing that the federal government has plans to eventually purchase all of the rather large privately-held high mountain
estates that have long defined "legal ownership" of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in south central Coloado and
north central New Mexico. This was considered to be a real BOMB-SHELL announcement but as was commented by several individuals
in some of the local editorials and news accounts: With this type of investment being at least a billion dollars and amounting
to one million acres of land in the southwest, it seems to have little chance of going ahead at this particular time. This
was only directed at the LARGE landowners, such as Louis Bacon, Ted Turner, Gary Boyce, and Bobby and Dottie Hill - owners
of the former Taylor Ranch in Costilla County.
